TODAY'S MESSAGE IS TITLED

"Behold, the Fear of the Lord, That Is Wisdom, and to Depart from Evil Is Understanding"
The Text is found in Job 28:28

"And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding."

Introduction:

There are moments in life when we pause and ask deep, soul-searching questions. What really matters? What is true wisdom? How do we live rightly in a world full of confusion, temptation, and conflicting voices?

The book of Job is a journey through pain, loss, and the quest for meaning. And tucked within that journey is a powerful revelation—a divine whisper that cuts through the noise: "Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding."

Let's unravel this. Because in this one sentence lies the foundation for godly living.

  1. 1. "Behold" Listen here! is a Call to Attention

The word "Behold" is not passive. It's a shout, a spiritual highlighter. God is saying to you, "Look! Pay attention!" This isn't just good advice—it's divine instruction. Heaven is calling us to see something that the world often misses.

True wisdom isn't found in universities, trending podcasts, or the latest influencers. It begins with a posture of reverence—the fear of the Lord.

  2. 2. The Fear of the Lord—What Does It Really Mean?

Now let's be clear: when Scripture speaks of "the fear of the Lord," it's not talking about terror or dread like we feel when something is about to harm us.

No, this is a holy reverence—a deep awe and respect for who God is. It's recognizing that He is Creator and we are His creation. It's living with a heart that says, "God, You are worthy. You are righteous. Your ways are higher than mine."

Proverbs 9:10 echoes it: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." In other words, if you want to be truly wise, you have to start with God—acknowledging His authority, trusting His word, and submitting to His will.

  3. 3. That is Wisdom—A Reoriented Mind

When you fear the Lord, your mind starts to shift. You don't see the world the same way. You begin to measure success not by status or possessions, but by obedience and faithfulness.

You no longer ask, "Is this popular?" but rather, "Is this pleasing to God?"

Wisdom isn't just knowing the right thing—it's doing it. It's a divine compass that points us toward God's heart in every decision.

  4. 4. "To Depart from Evil"—That Is The Test of Understanding

Wisdom and understanding are not just head knowledge—they are revealed in how we live.

"To depart from evil is understanding." In other words, when you really get God—when your heart truly understands His holiness—you won't stay in sin. You'll flee from it. You'll reject it. You won't try to see how close you can get to the line; you'll run from the line altogether.

Joseph didn't debate with Potiphar's wife—he ran. That's understanding. That's someone who fears the Lord.

  5. 5. Wisdom in a Foolish Age

We live in a generation where people call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). Where the fear of man often outweighs the fear of God. But here's the truth: You can't have God's wisdom if you're more concerned with fitting in than standing out.

The wise person builds their life on God's Word, not the shifting sands of culture.

  6. 6. The Promise for Those Who Fear the Lord

Psalm 25:14 says, "The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant."
In other words, when you walk in reverence, God reveals things to you. He shows you His ways, His heart, His plans. He gives you peace in confusion, direction in uncertainty, and strength in weakness.

There's glory in the fear of the Lord. There's also safety, honor, and blessing.

Conclusion:
So I urge you today: Behold! Pay attention! Don't chase after the wisdom of the world.

Fear the Lord. Let His Word shape your values, decisions, and desires. And when trouble comes knocking, don't negotiate—depart from it. That's not just wise, That's understanding.
Brethren, In a world that is upside down, may you walk right side up, rooted in reverence, guided by wisdom, and marked by holiness.

Let's Pray:
Heavenly Father, please teach us to fear You rightly. Let Your wisdom fill our minds and Your understanding guide our every step. Help us to depart from everything evil that tries to pull us away from You. In Jesus most precious Name.
Amen.
