Here's A Question That Probes the Heart

"Can you work for God except you be agreed?"

This isn't a casual question-it is a divine checkpoint. Before anyone can truly labor for God, there must first be an alignment with God.

Just like no one can walk in true fellowship with another without mutual agreement, you cannot serve God while disagreeing with His ways, His timing, or His will.
Agreement isn't mere words. It is a matter of the heart, of submission, of trust, and of obedience.

Let's explore what it truly means to agree with God-and why agreement is the foundation of effective service.

  1. 1. AGREEMENT WITH GOD IS ESSENTIAL FOR KINGDOM PARTNERSHIP
    Amos 3:3
"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"

The Christian life is a journey with God. Working for God isn't transactional-it's relational.
And every relationship that is meant to function fruitfully must have agreement.

    Agreement with God means:

Accepting His ways-even when they're higher than yours (Isaiah 55:8–9)

Trusting His timing-even when it seems delayed

Submitting to His process-even when it's uncomfortable

Embracing His Word-even when it corrects you

You can't truly work with someone whose vision you don't share.
In the same way, you can't work for God while resisting His Word or resenting His will.

  2. 2. EXAMPLES OF AGREEMENT BEFORE ASSIGNMENT

Let's examine a few biblical figures who couldn't serve until they first came into agreement with God:

    Moses – Exodus 3–4

God called Moses to deliver Israel, but Moses had doubts.
He said: "Who am I… I can't speak well… Please send someone else."

God had to bring Moses into agreement before the assignment could begin.

Lesson: Before you work for God, He'll deal with your excuses and fears. You must first agree that He is able through you. He says 'come let's reason together.'

    Jonah – Jonah 1–4

Jonah tried to run away from God's call to Nineveh.
He disagreed with God's mercy and God's mission.
God had to bring him to a place of submission before He could work through him.

Lesson: You may carry an anointing, but until your heart agrees with God's purpose, your service will lack obedience.

    Mary – Luke 1:38

When the angel told Mary the mother of Jesus Christ she would conceive by the Holy Spirit, her response was powerful:

"Be it unto me according to thy word."

That was agreement-and it opened the door to one of the greatest assignments ever given to humankind.

    Lesson: Agreement births divine partnership.

God will wait for your yes before He moves through you.

  3. 3. AGREEMENT DEMANDS ALIGNMENT OF HEART AND ACTION

    Romans 12:2 (NIV)

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…"

You cannot work for God while thinking like the world.
Renewed minds lead to aligned hearts-and aligned hearts produce fruitful service.

You can't say "Lord, use me" and then resist His discipline.
You can't pray "Your will be done" and then insist on your own way.

To agree with God means to die to self daily and take up the cross (Luke 9:23).
It means to say: "God, not my will, but Yours."

  4. 4. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU AGREE WITH GOD?

When you agree with God, three powerful things begin to happen:

    1. i. You Walk in Power

      "How can two walk together…"
Agreement with God brings spiritual momentum. You walk in step with the Holy Spirit.

    2. ii. You Hear Clearly

Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice." (John 10:27)
When you're in agreement, you're tuned in, not confused or rebellious.

    3. iii. You Bear Fruit

"If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit…" – John 15:5
Agreement leads to abiding, and abiding leads to fruitfulness in all areas-ministry, relationships, and growth.

    4. iv. THE DANGERS OF DISAGREEMENT WITH GOD

When we try to work for God without agreement, we risk:

Burnout – Serving in your strength, not His Spirit

Confusion – Operating without clarity of purpose

Disobedience – Doing the right thing the wrong way

Pride – Thinking God should follow your plan

Saul lost his kingdom because he served without full obedience (1 Samuel 15:22–23).
He partially obeyed-and that disagreement cost him everything.

CHOOSE AGREEMENT OVER AMBITION

Can you work for God except you be agreed?

The answer is a sobering NO.
You may attempt, but you won't be effective.
You may be busy, but you won't be fruitful.
You may be gifted, but you won't be led.

Choose to agree with God:

  • In your beliefs
  • In your character
  • In your priorities
  • In your purpose

Because only those who walk with Him in agreement will be used mightily for Him.

CLOSING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I don't just want to work for You-I want to walk in step with You.
Help me to surrender fully, to trust completely, and to obey willingly.
Where my heart has wrestled against Your ways, bring me back into agreement.
Make me usable. Make me aligned. And make me fruitful in Your service.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
