MESSAGE Title: "How to Dwell in God's Presence"
Text: Psalm 91:1 (KJV)
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Introduction
Greetings beloved!
We live in a time when noise, stress, and distraction surround us daily. Many of us seek peace, direction, strength, and comfort. But there's one place where all these are found consistently: the presence of God. Not a place we visit occasionally, but a place where we can dwell — a lifestyle, not just a momentary visit.
David said in Psalm 27:4:
"One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life..."
So, how do we get there? How do we dwell, not just visit, the presence of God?
Let us look at three keys to dwelling in God’s presence.
First is to Desire and Pursue God's Presence Intentionally
Psalm 42:1-2 – “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”
Dwelling begins with desire. You don’t accidentally end up in God’s presence. You must hunger for Him above all else.
How to Cultivate Desire:
- 1. Spend time in the Word — the Bible reveals God’s heart.
- 2. Fast and pray — deny the flesh to feed the spirit.
- 3. Remove distractions — sometimes we miss His presence because we’re too preoccupied.
Let me Illustrate:
Imagine a lover writing heartfelt letters, but they’re never read. That’s how God feels when we neglect His Word and prayer. He desires fellowship more than we know.
James 4:8 – "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."
Walk in Holiness and Obedience
Psalm 24:3-4 – “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart...”
God’s presence is holy. We cannot live in sin and expect to enjoy the fullness of His nearness. Jesus said in John 14:23:
"If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him."
Practical Steps to Walk in Holiness:
- 1. Daily repentance and confession.
- 2. Letting the Holy Spirit convict and correct us.
- 3. Walking in love, humility, and forgiveness.
Let’s Illustrate This:
Just like a fish cannot live outside water, a believer cannot live outside God’s presence and still thrive spiritually. Sin pollutes the atmosphere of intimacy — but the good news is that Jesus made a way back through His blood.
Hebrews 10:22 – "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience..."
Live a Life of Worship and Fellowship
Psalm 22:3 – “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.”
Worship is not just singing songs on Sunday — it’s a life of adoration, surrender, and acknowledgement of God’s worth every day.
Ways to Maintain Worship and Fellowship:
- 1. Begin and end each day with thanksgiving.
- 2. Surround yourself with godly community and accountability.
- 3. Maintain a lifestyle of continual prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Illustration:
The tabernacle of Moses had three parts: outer court, inner court, and Holy of Holies. Many Christians remain in the outer court (salvation), few enter the Holy of Holies (intimacy). Worship is the incense that brings us into the holiest place.
John 4:23 – “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth…”
Conclusion: Living in the Presence of God
Dwelling in God's presence is more than a Sunday experience; it's a daily pursuit, a life of holiness, and a heart of worship.
- 1. Desire it – Hunger for Him more than the world.
- 2. Live clean – Obey His Word and walk in holiness.
- 3. Worship continually – Let your life reflect His glory.
Concluding Scripture: Psalm 16:11
“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Call to Reflection and Prayer:
- 1. Is your desire for God alive and burning?
- 2. Are there areas of your life that hinder His presence?
- 3. Will you today, commit to living in conscious, continual communion with Him?
Pray with me:
"Father, I desire to dwell in Your presence. Create in me a clean heart, renew a right spirit within me. Let me hunger and thirst after You daily. Draw me close, and help me abide under the shadow of Your presence In Jesus’ name, amen."
