PRAYER OF FAITH (PART 4– The Prayer of Petition)
Hey fam!
Welcome back to our series on PRAYER. This is Part 4, and trust me, it’s a good one. We’re delving into something that every believer needs to master—the Prayer of Petition.
First, let’s take a quick moment to pray together:
"Father, thank You for what You’re about to teach us. We are ready to learn, grow, and work this out. Let this not just be informative, but transformative. In Jesus' name, amen."
What’s a Petition, Anyway?
When we hear the word petition, we might think of legal documents or protests, right? Something formal, maybe a little intimidating. But spiritually speaking, a petition is simply a heartfelt, focused request to God.
Think of it like this: you're bringing a case before the highest court in the universe—God’s throne. And you’re doing it with purpose, confidence, and clarity. It’s not about rambling or using fancy religious words—it’s about being real, focused, and aligned with what God wants to do.
Pray According to His Will
Let’s talk Bible for a second. Here’s 1st John 5:14–15:
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.”
Most people read that and get stuck on the phrase “according to His will.” And they go, “Well, maybe God didn’t want me to have that job… that healing… that breakthrough…”
But hold up. That’s not what this is saying.
It’s not just about what you’re asking for—it’s about how you ask. It’s about understanding the Kingdom protocol for making requests. God’s not playing hide-and-seek with your destiny.
He wants you to come boldly and ask with confidence—but the key is asking in His name, not just your need.
Jesus Changed the Game
Before Jesus came, people prayed to God through priests, prophets, even angels. Some folks still try to go through Mary or saints today. But Jesus flipped the script.
Here’s what He said in John 16:23–24:
“Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give you... Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
Boom. Right there—you have access. No go-betweens needed. God loves you. He wants to hear from you directly. And Jesus gave you His name like a blank check. That’s wild when you think about it!
The Power of Heartfelt Prayer
Let’s talk about how we pray these petitions. James 5:16 (AMP) hits hard:
“The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].”
Three key words:
- 1. Earnest – You’re not just going through the motions.
- 2. Heartfelt – It matters to you. It stirs something deep inside.
- 3. Continued – You stick with it until something shifts.
This kind of prayer isn’t just powerful—it’s transformational. It brings real change.
Elijah: A Prayer Warrior Like Us
James also brings up Elijah. You might think, “Well, he was a prophet. Of course his prayers worked!” But nope—James says Elijah was just like us.
“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain…” (James 5:17)
Catch that? Elijah didn’t just walk into the king’s palace one day, declare a drought, and mic-drop. Behind the scenes, he prayed. Hard. In private.
And that’s a huge takeaway: before there’s public power, there must be private prayer.
Later, when it was time for rain again, God said, “I will send rain.” You’d think, okay cool, God said it—rain’s coming. But Elijah still went and prayed again, with his face between his knees, until it actually happened.
Lesson? Even when God promises something, we pray it through.
Keep Going Until It Breaks
So many of us stop too soon.
We live in a microwave world—fast food, fast Wi-Fi, fast everything. And we expect God to match our pace. But spiritual breakthroughs don’t always come in 5 minutes.
Sometimes, you need to stay in the place of prayer until something breaks inside you, around you, or in the atmosphere. That’s the prayer of petition.
Don’t Wait for a Crisis
Picture this: A man’s wife is being rushed into surgery during a complicated labour, and now he’s calling everyone to pray. But he had nine months to bring that situation before God.
Or the student who’s pulling an all-night prayer session before an exam, but hasn’t prayed about it all semester.
Sound familiar?
We treat prayer like a last-minute emergency hotline when it should have been a daily lifestyle. Don’t wait for things to fall apart before you engage your faith.
When Do You Pray the Prayer of Petition?
- 1. Whenever you’re dealing with something outside your control—
- 2. Circumstances influenced by others
- 3. Issues with authorities or systems
- 4. Spiritual resistance
- 5. Or anything that needs divine intervention…
That’s when you pull out this tool.
Petition prayer is how you say, “God, I can’t fix this on my own. I need You—and I know You hear me when I ask in the name of Jesus.”
Final Thoughts
Listen: The Prayer of Faith isn’t some vague religious concept. It’s a real, powerful practice. And the prayer of petition is one of your most powerful tools when used right.
But you’ve got to do your part. Pray intentionally, earnestly, and consistently—and in the Name that carries the authority of heaven. JESUS.
So, take what you’ve learned today. Go to your prayer closet. Bring your case before God. And pray until there is an answer, play your part, and act with legal precision until you achieve your desired outcome.
Let’s Pray.
Father, thank You for teaching us how to pray and pray till we have our petition.
In all things, may Your name alone be glorified in Jesus' Name.
Amen.
