Becoming A Spiritual Mentor, Not Just Getting Older

Welcome again to your favorite transformative Christian podcast - Let's Talk God 'n' Christ!
I'm so glad you're here with me today. Grab a warm drink, settle in, and let's go deep into something the church - and the world - needs right now: Spiritual Mentorship.

But first, let's pray.

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for this new day and this new moment to grow in grace and truth. Open our hearts as we listen, and help us not only to grow older in years but to grow deeper in You - so we can pour our experiences into others. In Jesus' name, amen.

Have You Ever Wondered…

  • 1. Why is it that some people grow older but not necessarily wiser?
  • 2. Why do some believers spend 30, 40 years in the faith but remain spiritually shallow - while others, maybe newer in the faith, have such deep wisdom and grace

That's what we're talking about today:
Becoming a Spiritual Mentor… not just getting older.

  1. 1. Getting older is automatic.
  2. 2. Growing spiritually is intentional.
  3. 3. Becoming a mentor? That's a divine assignment.

Let's Start With Scripture:

Titus 2:3–5 (NLT)
"Teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women..."

And verse 6 says:

"Similarly, encourage the young men to live wisely."

You see it? Paul didn't just tell the older believers to sit in church and age gracefully.
He told them to teach, train, and encourage the younger ones.

What's the Difference Between Getting Older and Becoming a Mentor?

Here's the key difference:

  • a). Getting older adds years.
  • b). Becoming a mentor adds value.
  • c). Getting older is about survival.

Mentorship is about legacy
Listen - the Lord didn't keep you alive and preserve you through storms just so you can say, "I've seen it all."
He kept you so you can say, "Here's how God brought me through - and here's how He can do it for you too."

Your Scars Are Someone Else's Survival Manual

Don't despise your journey. The mistakes, the waiting seasons, the late-night tears, the financial struggles, the healing after betrayal - all of it is mentorship material.

God wants to use what you've lived through to raise someone else up.

2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT)
"He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others..."

That's mentorship.

Why Some Don't Mentor

Let's be honest - sometimes we avoid spiritual mentoring because:

"I don't have it all together."
But mentoring isn't about perfection - it's about perspective.

"They won't listen to me."
That's not your business. Plant the seed. God gives the growth.

"I'm too old, or too tired."
But if you've still got breath, you've still got purpose!

Be the Voice You Needed

Think back to your early walk with God. Was there someone who took time to guide you? Pray with you? Explain the Bible in simple terms?
Maybe there wasn't.

So now, you become that person.
Be the voice you needed when you were younger in the faith.
Be the hand that steadies the new believer. Be the cheerleader for the weary. Be the wisdom in the wilderness.

How to Begin Being a Spiritual Mentor:

Pray for God to show you whom to pour into.
It may be a young woman in church. A new convert. A struggling neighbour.

Share your story.
Not just your triumphs - your trials too. That's where the power is.
Be available and intentional.
Call. Text. Check in. Walk alongside someone. That's mentorship.

Keep growing.
Mentors don't stop learning. You're still growing while you're guiding others.

Final Thought:

You are not too old to matter.
You are not too "ordinary" to be impactful.
You don't need a mic, a pulpit, or a title to mentor.
All you need is a willing heart and a story surrendered to God.

Psalm 92:14 (NIV)
"They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green."

That's the promise. That's our portion.

Let's Pray Together:
Father, thank You for the wisdom and experiences You've given us. Help us not to hoard them but to use them for the next generation. Teach us to become spiritual mentors - living legacies of Your grace. Lead us to those we are meant to disciple. Help us grow deeper, not just older. In Jesus' name, amen.

Thank you for tuning in to Let's Talk God 'n' Christ!
Until next time, remember: Every year you grow older is another chance to grow deeper - and to pour into someone else.
Stay blessed, stay fruitful, and go mentor somebody today
